Regina 3D Launcher for Android, 3D Home Replacement App
One of the advantages of owning an Android smartphone is the endless possibility it offers you as far as customization goes. There is nothing in the OS that can’t be altered in one way or another. Some require root access while others can be done with a simple app from the market place. If you’ve ever bought a HTC or Samsung phone, you’ll realize they both come with their distinctive UI, called Sense UI and TouchWiz respectively. Similarly Motorola has the MotoBlur. However what happens if you don’t like the UI? Well here’s where applications like Regina Launcher come into play. They’re dubbed ‘home replacements’. If you’ve heard of Launcher Pro, then Regina Launcher does just that.
There’s a wide assortment of launchers on the Android market. From Launcher Pro to ADW, they all bring something new to the table. However in the case of these two there’s not a lot of visual alteration of the UI but rather a simple and fast home replacement. Not to mention none of these are free. Another alternate is the SPB shell which does change the look drastically, however comes with a hefty 15$ price rag. Regina launcher is free of cost.
Regina Launcher doesn’t try to be a launcher bucket full of features like it’s paid siblings. What it does it provide a neat home replacement that makes enough visual alternations while maintaining performance. The interface is quite fun to play around with. You simple swipe across the screen to switch screens. This happens with fluid 3D animations and haptic feedback. If you swipe really slowly, all homescreens pile up like a deck of cards through which you can then switch screens. Each home screen is treated as a separate workspace. This means each screen can have a different wallpaper and a custom title. By default the launcher comes with a few widgets like the clock, weather, appointment, to-do and the missed calls/sms widget. All these are beautifully designed. For example the clock widget has a nice animation where the dials rotate. The best way to explain this to imagine an analog odo meter of a car. The weather widget is also very pleasant to look at. It can display the current weather or the forecast if you so please.

One of the best features of this launcher is to ability to have ‘hidden workspaces’. You basically set a password sequence that is a series of taps on the screen. Hit the taps on the right location and it will reveal a set of hidden home screens that were not visible before. The app drawer is the usual grid of icons. You swipe horizontally to switch screens. Long press an icon to place a shortcut on the home screen. Long press also gives the option of uninstalling the app right from the app drawer. The ability to remove, add or rearrange homescreens is also present. To check for updates, simple go to settings and click check for updates. You’ll be notified of any updates available. No need to open the market.

There’s very little to find fault in Regina Launcher. It’s a departure from the run of the mill homescreen replacements like LaunchPro and ADW. It provides a unique visual experience that other launchers don’t. The ability to have secret homescreens is genius in my opinion and I commend them to come up with something like that. And best of all, it’s totally free of cost. Which is what makes this one of the must have apps if you’re using and Android smartphone.
